Spring Hill Fair was released in September 1984 in the UK on Sire Records. It was The Go-Betweens' third album. The LP was recorded at Studio Miraval in Le Val, France. Prior to the recording of the album, bass player Robert Vickers had joined the group, enabling Grant McLennan to move to lead guitar. The original release consisted of ten songs. In 2002, Circus released an expanded CD which included a second disc of ten bonus tracks and a music video for the song, "Bachelor Kisses". The album was named Spring Hill Fair after an annual fair in Spring Hill, Queensland, suburb of Brisbane Grammar School, Forster's high school.

Famous quotes containing the words spring, hill and/or fair:

For spring had entered the capital
    Walking on gigantic feet.
The smell of witch hazel indoors
Changed to narcissus in the street.
    John Ashbery (b. 1927)

Cole’s Hill was the scene of the secret night burials of those who died during the first year of the settlement. Corn was planted over their graves so that the Indians should not know how many of their number had perished.
—For the State of Massachusetts, U.S. public relief program (1935-1943)

    Curse of the orchard,
Blemish on the land’s fair countenance,
I have grown strong for strength denied, for struggle
In hostile woods. I keep alive by being the troublesome,
    Indestructible
    Stinkweed of truth.
    Naomi Long Madgett (b. 1923)
