Southern Tomb 25 at Amarna was intended for the burial of Ay, who later became Pharaoh, after Tutankhamun. The tomb was never finished, and he was later buried in the Western Valley of the Valley of the Kings (WV23), in Thebes.
The tomb was only partially carved from the rock, with the first part of the pillared hall approaching completion. The tomb contains depictions of Ay receiving rewards from Akhenaten and Nefertiti.
The tomb also contains a version of the Great Hymn to the Aten.
Famous quotes containing the words southern and/or tomb:
“Southern trees bear a strange fruit
Blood on the leaf and blood at the root
Black bodies swingin in the southern breeze
Strange fruit hangin in the poplar trees.”
—Billie Holiday [Eleanor Fagan] (19151959)
“And so all the night-tide, I lie down by the side
Of my darling, my darling, my life and my bride
In her sepulchre there by the sea
In her tomb by the side of the sea.”
—Edgar Allan Poe (18091849)
