South Norway

South Norway (nor: Sør-Norge, n.sam: Lulli-Norga) is the southern third of Norway, consisting of the regions Vestlandet, Østlandet and Sørlandet. South Norway has no administrative functions, and does not constitute a cultural or linguistic region - as opposed to Central Norway/Trøndelag and particularly North Norway. To people from the latter region in particular, citizens hailing from the southern third are known as "søringer" (southerners). The inhabitants themselves, however, have no common "southern" identity. Rather, they identify with the regions they are from and call themselves "vestlendinger", "østlendinger" and "sørlendinger".

South Norway must not be confused with Sørlandet, the region which name - when literally translated - means the South Country.

Famous quotes containing the words south and/or norway:

My course is a firm assertion and maintenance of the rights of the colored people of the South according to the Thirteenth, Fourteenth, and Fifteenth Amendments, coupled with a readiness to recognize all Southern people, without regard to past political conduct, who will now go with me heartily and in good faith in support of these principles.
    Rutherford Birchard Hayes (1822–1893)

Such was the very armor he had on
When he the ambitious Norway combated.
    William Shakespeare (1564–1616)
