  • Her Imperial Majesty The Queen of Iran (1951–1958)
  • Her Imperial Highness Princess Soraya of Iran (1958–2001)

Though her husband's title, Shahanshah (King of Kings), is the equivalent of Emperor, it was not until 1967 that a complementary feminine title, Shahbanu or Shahbanou (equivalent of Empress consort), was created to designate the consort of a Shah. Farah Pahlavi was the first and last to have this title. Until then, wives of Shahs (including Soraya) bore the title Malake (which is comparable with that of Queen Consort), though in the popular press they frequently and incorrectly were called "Empress".

Upon the divorce, Soraya lost the title "Queen", but a day later she was granted the personal style and title Her Imperial Highness Princess Soraya of Iran.

Famous quotes containing the word titles:

I have known a German Prince with more titles than subjects, and a Spanish nobleman with more names than shirts.
    Oliver Goldsmith (1728–1774)

Lear. Dost thou call me fool, boy?
Fool. All thy other titles thou hast given away; that thou wast born with.
    William Shakespeare (1564–1616)

We have to be despised by somebody whom we regard as above us, or we are not happy; we have to have somebody to worship and envy, or we cannot be content. In America we manifest this in all the ancient and customary ways. In public we scoff at titles and hereditary privilege, but privately we hanker after them, and when we get a chance we buy them for cash and a daughter.
Mark Twain [Samuel Langhorne Clemens] (1835–1910)
