The Snyder Fire District

The Snyder Fire District is the authority having jurisdiction over the Snder Fire Department and responsible for providing fire, EMS and other emergency services to the residents and taxpayers within the Fire District. It is governed by a five member Board of Fire Commissioners. Fire Commissioners are elected public officials who establish an annual operating budget through a public hearing process; the budget is funded by real property taxes collected by the Town of Amherst and paid to the Fire District. Taxes fund all operations of the Fire District including supplying firefighting equipment and apparatus as well as operation the firehouse.

The five commissioners are elected to a five-year term on a staggered basis. The annual fire district election is held on the second Tuesday in December from 6-9 p.m. at the firestation and all registered voters who reside in the Fire District 30 days prior to the election are eligible to vote. Any person 18 years of age or older who is a resident of the Snyder Fire District may be elected as a commissioner; candidates must simply file a petition for placing their names on the ballot with the Secretary of the Fire District. Fire Commissioners are uncompensated.

The Fire District has paid employees, including the Fire District Secretary and the Fire District Treasurer. The Fire District also employs a Master Mechanic and a Custodian, as well as other support personnel.

The Snyder Fire District Board of Fire Commissioners meets on the third Tuesday of the month at 7:30 p.m. at the Fire Station, and all meetings are open to the public.
