History
Work on what would have been the original Beach Boys version of Smile began in 1966, following the release of their album Pet Sounds, and based on the recording mode of their single "Good Vibrations". The original artwork and cover design was done by Frank J. Holmes.
The original failure to complete Smile has been attributed to several factors: resistance from the other members of the band (especially Mike Love) and Capitol Records; technical recording difficulties (many of Brian's ideas were so inventive and new that the technology to record his true vision did not exist); Wilson's growing dissatisfaction (and increasing paranoia) with the project itself; and Wilson's mental breakdown into severe depression, which went unchecked for decades.

Famous quotes containing the word history:
“The visual is sorely undervalued in modern scholarship. Art history has attained only a fraction of the conceptual sophistication of literary criticism.... Drunk with self-love, criticism has hugely overestimated the centrality of language to western culture. It has failed to see the electrifying sign language of images.”
—Camille Paglia (b. 1947)
“The principle office of history I take to be this: to prevent virtuous actions from being forgotten, and that evil words and deeds should fear an infamous reputation with posterity.”
—Tacitus (c. 55117)
“There is no history of how bad became better.”
—Henry David Thoreau (18171862)
