Slug and Lettuce

Slug and Lettuce is a chain of bars that operate in the United Kingdom, with a large number located in London and South East England. As of 2013, there are a total of 71 outlets. The first Slug was opened in Islington by Hugh Corbett in 1984. Corbett attempted to premiumise the pub experience, at a time when standards were often low.

The bars are designed for a youthful clientele, and aim to attract an equal number of both men and women with "female friendly" designs. The chain has continued to survive by constantly re-inventing itself to make it relevant for the contemporary marketplace. Rival bar chains catering for a youthful market include All Bar One and Pitcher & Piano. The chain has gone through a number of owners throughout its history, and is currently owned by the Stonegate Pub Company, based in Luton, Bedfordshire.

All Slug and Lettuce outlets serve food throughout the day, and the meals are English inspired, with offerings including burgers, pasta and salad. Outlets offer a range of cocktails, as well as beer and wine. Since 2011, outlets have opened early for breakfast.

Famous quotes containing the words slug and/or lettuce:

    Adrift dissolving, bound for death;
    Though lumpish thou, a lumbering one—
    A lumbering lubbard loitering slow,
    Impingers rue thee and go down,
    Sounding thy precipice below,
    Nor stir the slimy slug that sprawls
    Along thy dead indifference of walls.
    Herman Melville (1819–1891)

    I did toy with the idea of doing a cook-book.... The recipes were to be the routine ones: how to make dry toast, instant coffee, hearts of lettuce and brownies. But as an added attraction, at no extra charge, my idea was to put a fried egg on the cover. I think a lot of people who hate literature but love fried eggs would buy it if the price was right.
    Groucho Marx (1895–1977)
