Michael Seymour's younger brother, Richard, also joined the navy, reaching the rank of lieutenant. He served aboard HMS Amazon but was killed in the battle against the French frigate Belle Poule on 13 March 1806. Michael Seymour married Jane in 1797, and the couple had five sons and three daughters. His eldest son, John, inherited the baronetcy on his father's death. His third and fourth sons, Michael and Edward, followed their father into the navy. Michael had a distinguished career, rising to the rank of Admiral. Famous quotes containing the word family:

Grandmothers are to life what the Ph.D. is to education. There is nothing you can feel, taste, expect, predict, or want that the grandmothers in your family do not know about in detail.
    Lois Wyse (20th century)

Children should know there are limits to family finances or they will confuse “we can’t afford that” with “they don’t want me to have it.” The first statement is a realistic and objective assessment of a situation, while the other carries an emotional message.
    Jean Ross Peterson (20th century)

In the middle classes the gifted son of a family is always the poorest—usually a writer or artist with no sense for speculation—and in a family of peasants, where the average comfort is just over penury, the gifted son sinks also, and is soon a tramp on the roadside.
    —J.M. (John Millington)
