Saltwater Intrusion - Effect On Drinking Water

Effect On Drinking Water

When fresh water is withdrawn at a faster rate than it can be replenished, the water table is drawn down as a result. This draw-down also reduces the hydrostatic pressure. When this happens near an ocean coastal area, saltwater from the ocean is pulled into the fresh water aquifer. The result is that the aquifer becomes contaminated with saltwater. This is happening to many coastal communities.

That sound, everywhere about us, of the sea—
the tree among its tresses has always heard it,
and the horse dips his black body in the sound
stretching his neck as if towards drinking water ...
    Denise Levertov (b. 1923)

Living more lives than one, knowing people of all classes, all shades of opinion, monarchists, republicans, socialists, anarchists, has had a salutary effect on my mind. If every year of my life, every month of the year, I had lived with reformers and crusaders I should be, by this time, a fanatic. As it is I have had such varied things to do, I have had so many different contacts that I am not even very much of a crank.
    Rheta Childe Dorr (1866–1948)

In effect it seemed to him that, though honor might possess certain advantages, yet shame had others, and not inferior: advantages, even, that were well-nigh boundless in their scope.
    Thomas Mann (1875–1955)

There is a difference between eating and drinking for strength and from mere gluttony.
    Henry David Thoreau (1817–1862)

Why are a lady’s thighs always cool? That is, said the monk, due to three causes for which a place is always naturally cool: primo, because water runs all the way down it; secondo, because it is in a shady, dark and obscure place, where the sun never shines; and thirdly, because it is continually fanned by the winds from the breezy hole.
    François Rabelais (1494–1553)
