Russian Language in Ukraine

The Russian language in Ukraine gained the official status of a regional language in several southern and eastern oblasts and cities following the passing of a controversial language law in August 2012. Russian is the most common first language in Donbass and Crimea regions, the predominant language in large cities in the East and South of the country. The usage and status of the language (currently Ukrainian is the only official language of Ukraine) is an object of political disputes within Ukrainian society.

Famous quotes containing the words russian and/or language:

    What man dare, I dare.
    Approach thou like the rugged Russian bear,
    The armed rhinoceros, or the Hyrcan tiger;
    Take any shape but that, and my firm nerves
    Shall never tremble. Or be alive again
    And dare me to the desert with thy sword.
    William Shakespeare (1564–1616)

    The language of the younger generation ... has the brutality of the city and an assertion of threatening power at hand, not to come. It is military, theatrical, and at its most coherent probably a lasting repudiation of empty courtesy and bureaucratic euphemism.
    Elizabeth Hardwick (b. 1916)
