Main articles: Way of Former Heaven, Lord of Universe Church, and Falun Gong

A great diversity of new religious movements are thriving across China. The majority are indigenous, and into this group some are totally new whilst others were already active before the communist revolution in 1949, and are being re-introduced from Taiwan. The most relevant among these last are Yiguandao (and other sects within the Xiantiandao category), Tiendery-Tientism, Yaochidao and Zailiism.

Among the most recent of the new religions, the most notable are the various Qigong-inspired groups, such as Falun Gong, Zhong Gong, Yuanji Gong and Wang Gong, and Christian-inspired Taiping-style sects such as Zhushenism, Linglingism, Fuhuodao, Mentuhui and Lightning from the East. Other movements are allogenous in origin, for example the Bahá'í Faith.

Famous quotes containing the words religious and/or movements:

The destiny of the whole race is comprised in four things: Religion, education, morals, politics. Woman is a religious being; she is becoming educated; she has a high code of morals; she will yet purify politics.
    Zerelda G. Wallace (1817–1901)

In a universe that is all gradations of matter, from gross to fine to finer, so that we end up with everything we are composed of in a lattice, a grid, a mesh, a mist, where particles or movements so small we cannot observe them are held in a strict and accurate web, that is nevertheless nonexistent to the eyes we use for ordinary living—in this system of fine and finer, where then is the substance of a thought?
    Doris Lessing (b. 1919)
