Red Hurley - Eurovision Song Contest

Eurovision Song Contest

In 1976 Hurley represented Ireland at the Eurovision Song Contest. Though one of the early favorites to win the contest, his song was beaten on the night by the strong UK entry "Brotherhood of Man" with their song, "Save Your Kisses for Me". Red's song "When" became a huge chart hit in Ireland and is still popular today with Eurovision fans and regularly included in Red's live shows. 'When' was written by Brendan Graham, who subsequently composed two Eurovision winning songs for Ireland, 'Rock and Roll Kids' in 1994 and 'The Voice' for mezzo soprano Eimear Quinn in 1997. Graham also later co-wrote the classic 'You Raise Me Up', which became a worldwide hit for "Josh Groban" and also charted in the UK for Irish vocal supremo Brian Kennedy and boy band "Westlife", though Kennedy's version is considered definitive.

Famous quotes containing the words song and/or contest:

I made my song a coat
    Covered with embroideries
    Out of old mythologies
    William Butler Yeats (1865–1939)

Another danger is imminent: A contested result. And we have no such means for its decision as ought to be provided by law. This must be attended to hereafter.... If a contest comes now it may lead to a conflict of arms. I can only try to do my duty to my countrymen in that case. I shall let no personal ambition turn me from the path of duty. Bloodshed and civil war must be averted if possible. If forced to fight, I have no fears from lack of courage or firmness.
    Rutherford Birchard Hayes (1822–1893)
