Alpha Dog of the Week is a segment in which Colbert heaps praise on one specific news maker from the previous week for, as Colbert himself puts it, being "such an imposing presence that people automatically fall in place behind you, deferentially sniffing your butt." The irony of the segment comes from the fact that the honoree has typically fallen from grace as a result of the supposed alpha behavior Colbert is celebrating.

Famous quotes containing the words alpha, dog and/or week:
“Imagination is a valuable asset in business and she has a sister, Understanding, who also serves. Together they make a splendid team and business problems dissolve and the impossible is accomplished by their ministrations.... Imagination concerning the worlds wants and the individuals needs should be the Alpha and Omega of self-education.”
—Alice Foote MacDougall (18671945)
“A dog starvd at his Masters Gate
Predicts the ruin of the State.”
—William Blake (17571827)
“[When asked: If women voted, would they not have to sit on juries?:] Many women would be glad of a chance to sit on anything. There are women who stand up and wash six days in the week at 75 cents a day who would like to take a vacation and sit on a jury at $1.50.”
—Anna Howard Shaw (18471919)
