Digital Video Recorders in Recording At The Edge

Most modern DVRs use Recording at the Edge. Analog cameras plug into the DVR; the video is compressed into a digital format, and then stored typically on a hard drive within the unit. Hybrid DVRs take this one step further by allowing the unit to accept either analog video inputs or IP video inputs. The DVR usually has IP connectivity so that a remote viewer can play back recorded video from across the network, or view live video.

However, a conventional IP-based CCTV architecture converts the video to IP but then demands that it is transmitted over the IP network to a remote viewing workstation or remote recorder (NVR). This is true of all network cameras as well as most of the IP video encoders available today.

He shall not die, by G—, cried my uncle Toby.
MThe ACCUSING SPIRIT which flew up to heaven’s chancery with the oath, blush’d as he gave it in;—and the RECORDING ANGEL as he wrote it down, dropp’d a tear upon the word, and blotted it out for ever.
    Laurence Sterne (1713–1768)

We hear the Secretary of State boasting of his brinkmanship—the art of bringing us to the edge of the abyss.
