History

Record was founded by a man called Manuel Dias. Dias was a newspaper vendor as well an athlete. Dias participated the 1936 Summer Olympics in Berlin, Germany. In 1949, Dias would enter the national lottery in Portugal and would win 40 contos. Dias would use these funds to establish the Record newspaper. The first edition of the newspaper was sold on a weekly basis and sold on 26 of November 1949. Over the 63 years, Record have had a difficult times and gone through becoming a privatizied company to a publicly traded one.

During the nineties, Record began to release its newspaper on a daily basis from Monday to Sunday. Record was acquired by the Cofina media conglomerate in 2001. In 2005, Record created an award called the Artur Agostinho Award in memory of Artur Agostinho which distinguishes the person of the year in sport.

Record claims it is the leading sport newspaper in Portugal, with 62 245 newspaper sold daily in 2011, and is also the leading website in Portuguese sport newspaper's with 216 million pageviews recorded in May 2012.
