2018 Winter Olympic Games
See also: 2018 Winter OlympicsOn 6 July 2011, Pyeongchang was announced as the host city for the 2018 Olympic Winter Games. The other candidate cities were Annecy, France and Munich, Germany. It will be the first Winter Games in Asia since the 1998 games in Nagano, Japan. Pyeongchang won their 2018 bid after two previous failed attempts for the 2010 and 2014 Winter Olympics, in which it lost to Vancouver, Canada, and Sochi, Russia respectively.
From a formal standpoint, given the Olympic Charter, which stipulates that the Games are awarded to a city, and the administrative organization of Korea, it is unclear whether the host city for the 2018 Games is the county of Pyeongchang or the county seat Pyeongchang-eup.
The name of the county is Pyeongchang, but the local authorities, the PyeongChang Organizing Committee for the 2018 Olympic & Paralympic Winter Games (POCOG) and the International Olympic Committee are generally using the camelCase PyeongChang.

Famous quotes containing the words winter, olympic and/or games:
“And in spite of all the dishonour,
The broken standards, the broken lives,
The broken faith in one place or another,
here was something left that was more than the tales
Of old men on winter evenings.
Only the faith could have done what was good of it....”
—T.S. (Thomas Stearns)
“Like Olympic medals and tennis trophies, all they signified was that the owner had done something of no benefit to anyone more capably than everyone else.”
—Joseph Heller (b. 1923)
“Intelligence and war are games, perhaps the only meaningful games left. If any player becomes too proficient, the game is threatened with termination.”
—William Burroughs (b. 1914)
