Political Parties in Australia

This article lists political parties in Australia.

The present day federal parliament has a number of distinctive features including compulsory voting, with full-preference instant-runoff voting in single-member seats to elect the lower house, the Australian House of Representatives, and the use of group ticket single transferable proportional voting to elect the upper house, the Australian Senate.

Australia has a mild two-party system, as illustrated by the two-party-preferred vote, with two dominant political groupings in the Australian political system, the Australian Labor Party, and the Liberal/National Coalition. Federally, the lower house currently has seven of 150 non-major party MPs, while the upper house has eleven of 76.

Famous quotes containing the words political, parties and/or australia:

It is the genius of our Constitution that under its shelter of enduring institutions and rooted principles there is ample room for the rich fertility of American political invention.
    Lyndon Baines Johnson (1908–1973)

Mixed dinner parties of ladies and gentlemen ... are very rare, which is a great defect in the society; not only as depriving them of the most social and hospitable manner of meeting, but as leading to frequent dinner parties of gentlemen without ladies, which certainly does not conduce to refinement.
    Frances Trollope (1780–1863)

It is very considerably smaller than Australia and British Somaliland put together. As things stand at present there is nothing much the Texans can do about this, and ... they are inclined to shy away from the subject in ordinary conversation, muttering defensively about the size of oranges.
Alex Atkinson, British humor writer. repr. In Present Laughter, ed. Alan Coren (1982)
