Phocis - Population

Population

With a population of 48,284 (2001), it is one of Greece's least populous regional units, and has a population density of less than 23 persons per km² (59/mi²). In the summer months, the population nearly doubles due to the influx of tourists.

Most of the villages are in the south, the southwest and the west, especially in the areas between Amfissa and Itea. The north and the east are the least populated.

Famous quotes containing the word population:

We in the West do not refrain from childbirth because we are concerned about the population explosion or because we feel we cannot afford children, but because we do not like children.
    Germaine Greer (b. 1939)

The population of the world is a conditional population; these are not the best, but the best that could live in the existing state of soils, gases, animals, and morals: the best that could yet live; there shall be a better, please God.
    Ralph Waldo Emerson (1803–1882)

The most advanced nations are always those who navigate the most. The power which the sea requires in the sailor makes a man of him very fast, and the change of shores and population clears his head of much nonsense of his wigwam.
    Ralph Waldo Emerson (1803–1882)
