Phenylalanine Racemase (ATP-hydrolysing) - Links To Disease

Links To Disease

Problems in the digestion of phenylalanine (phe) to tyrosine (tyr) lead to the build up of both phe and phenylpyruvate, in a disease called Phenylketonuria (PKU). These two compounds build up in the blood stream and cerebral spinal fluid, which can lead to mental retardation if left untreated. Treatment consists of a restricted diet of foods that contain phe or compounds that can breakdown into phe. Children in the US are routinely tested for this at birth. For more information see the Phenylketonuria page or the link below.

Famous quotes containing the words links to, links and/or disease:

An alliance is like a chain. It is not made stronger by adding weak links to it. A great power like the United States gains no advantage and it loses prestige by offering, indeed peddling, its alliances to all and sundry. An alliance should be hard diplomatic currency, valuable and hard to get, and not inflationary paper from the mimeograph machine in the State Department.
    Walter Lippmann (1889–1974)

I’ve gradually risen from lower-class background to lower-class foreground.
Marvin Cohen, U.S. author and humorist. Baseball the Beautiful, Links Books (1970)

It is said, proverbially, that happy is the doctor who is called in when the disease is on its way out.
    François Rabelais (1494–1553)
