Percutaneous Umbilical Cord Blood Sampling

Percutaneous umbilical cord blood sampling (PUBS), also called cordocentesis, is a diagnostic genetic test that examines blood from the fetal umbilical cord to detect fetal abnormalities. PUBS provides a means of rapid chromosome analysis and is useful when information cannot be obtained through amniocentesis, CVS, or ultrasound (or if the results of these tests were inconclusive). This test carries a significant risk of complication and is typically reserved for pregnancies determined to be at high risk for genetic defect.

Famous quotes containing the words cord and/or blood:

one is in a shoe factory cursing the machine,
one is at the aquarium tending a seal,
one is dull at the wheel of her Ford,
one is at the toll gate collecting,
one is tying the cord of a calf in Arizona,
one is straddling a cello in Russia....
    Anne Sexton (1928–1974)

Our hearts seemed safe in our breasts and sang to the
    Light—
    The marrow in the bone
We dreamed was safe . . . the blood in the veins, the
    sap in the tree
    Were springs of Deity.
    Dame Edith Sitwell (1887–1964)
