Skin and Soft Tissue Infections

Anaerobic gram-positive cocci and microaerophilic streptococci are often recovered in polymicrobial skin and soft tissue infections, such as gangrene, fasciitis, ulcers, diabetes-related foot infections, burns, human or animal bites, infected cysts, abcesse of the breast, rectum, and anus. Anaerobic gram-positive cocci and microaerophilic streptococci are generally found mixed with other aerobic and anaerobic florae that originate from the mucosal surface adjacent to the infected site or that have been inoculated into the infected site.

Gastrointestinal florae can cause infections such as gluteal decubitus ulcers, diabetes-related foot infections, and rectal abscesses. Anaerobic gram-positive cocci and microaerophilic streptococci are part of the normal skin florae, so it is hard to avoid contamination by these florae when obtaining specimens.

    or the warm soft side
    Of the resigning yet resisting bride.
    The kiss of virgins first-fruits of the bed;
    Soft speech, smooth touch, the lips, the maidenhead;
    These and a thousand sweets could never be
    So near or dear as thou wast once to me.
    Robert Herrick (1591–1674)

    Whether or not his newspaper and a set of senses reduced to five are the main sources of the so-called “real life” of the so- called average man, one thing is fortunately certain: namely, that the average man himself is but a piece of fiction, a tissue of statistics.
    Vladimir Nabokov (1899–1977)
