She is a minority owner of the Baltimore Orioles and is active in various charitable organizations. Her first husband, Joe Shapiro, a former Walt Disney Company lawyer, died of non-Hodgkin's lymphoma in 1999.
In 2002, Shriver married actor George Lazenby. She gave birth to their first child, George, Jr., on July 12, 2004, and to twins, Kate and Sam, on October 1, 2005. Shriver was also stepmother to Lazenby's daughter, Melanie Lazenby, from his previous marriage. The family lived in Brentwood, California. In August 2008, Shriver filed for divorce from Lazenby, citing "irreconcilable differences" for the end of the couple's six-year marriage.
Shriver has two sisters – Marion who died from cancer in 1997 and Eleanor who lives in Maryland – and is the fourth cousin of Maria Shriver, the former First Lady of California.

“He hadnt known me fifteen minutes, and yet he was ... ready to talk ... I was still to learn that Munshin, like many people from the capital, could talk openly about his personal life while remaining a dream of espionage in his business operations.”

“I am what is mine. Personality is the original personal property.”
—Norman O. Brown (b. 1913)
“After I discovered the real life of mothers bore little resemblance to the plot outlined in most of the books and articles Id read, I started relying on the expert advice of other mothersespecially those with sons a few years older than mine. This great body of knowledge is essentially an oral history, because anyone engaged in motherhood on a daily basis has no time to write an advice book about it.”
—Mary Kay Blakely (20th century)
