Measures

Among early votes that Cortez cast in the legislature were successful measures to restrict gifts to elected officials, banning public funds for human cloning, and prohibiting the use of cell phones while driving. He opposed the “Anti-Bullying” bill rejected by the state House in April 2008. Cortez also supported a failed measure in 2008 which would make it easier for juvenile offenders who commit heinous crimes to become eligible for parole, a position counter to his ally Robideaux. However, Cortez played an instrumental role in helping victims' rights supporters to defeat the same legislation in committee in 2009.

Famous quotes containing the word measures:

One point in my public life: I did all I could for the reform of the civil service, for the building up of the South, for a sound currency, etc., etc., but I never forgot my party.... I knew that all good measures would suffer if my Administration was followed by the defeat of my party. Result, a great victory in 1880. Executive and legislature both completely Republican.
    Rutherford Birchard Hayes (1822–1893)

Those who, while they disapprove of the character and measures of a government, yield to it their allegiance and support are undoubtedly its most conscientious supporters, and so frequently the most serious obstacles to reform.
    Henry David Thoreau (1817–1862)

A lake is the landscape’s most beautiful and expressive feature. It is earth’s eye; looking into which the beholder measures the depth of his own nature. The fluviatile trees next the shore are the slender eyelashes which fringe it, and the wooded hills and cliffs around are its overhanging brows.
    Henry David Thoreau (1817–1862)
