Outline Of Western Sahara

The following outline is provided as an overview of and topical guide to Western Sahara:

Western Sahara – occupied territory in North Africa, bordered by Morocco to the north, Algeria to the northeast, Mauritania to the east and south, and the Atlantic Ocean to the west. Its surface area amounts to 266,000 square kilometres (103,000 sq mi). It is one of the most sparsely populated territories in the world, mainly consisting of desert flatlands. The population is estimated at just over 500,000, many of whom live in El Aaiún (also spelled Laâyoune), the largest city in Western Sahara. Since a United Nations-sponsored ceasefire agreement in 1991, most of the territory (including the entire Atlantic coast line) has been controlled by Morocco and the remainder by the Sahrawi Arab Democratic Republic (SADR) (exiled government in Tindouf, Algeria), strongly backed by Algeria.

Famous quotes containing the words outline of, outline and/or western:

The beginning of an acquaintance whether with persons or things is to get a definite outline of our ignorance.
George Eliot [Mary Ann (or Marian)

It is the business of thought to define things, to find the boundaries; thought, indeed, is a ceaseless process of definition. It is the business of Art to give things shape. Anyone who takes no delight in the firm outline of an object, or in its essential character, has no artistic sense.... He cannot even be nourished by Art. Like Ephraim, he feeds upon the East wind, which has no boundaries.
    Vance Palmer (1885–1959)

I wouldn’t say when you’ve seen one Western you’ve seen the lot; but when you’ve seen the lot you get the feeling you’ve seen one.
    Katharine Whitehorn (b. 1926)
