Missionary Statesman

The travels and ministries of Smith multiplied. During his life he made 21 world tours promoting evangelism and world missions. Their success in evangelizing their own people proved the value of using nationals to Smith.

Famous quotes containing the words missionary and/or statesman:

    The missionary is no longer a man, a conscience. He is a corpse, in the hands of a confraternity, without family, without love, without any of the sentiments that are dear to us.... Emasculated, in a sense, by his vow of chastity, he offers us the distressing spectacle of a man deformed and impotent or engaged in a stupid and useless struggle with the sacred needs of the flesh, a struggle which, seven times out of ten, leads him to sodomy, the gallows, or prison.
    Paul Gauguin (1848–1903)

    A man so various, that he seemed to be
    Not one, but all mankind’s epitome.
    Stiff in opinions, always in the wrong;
    Was everything by starts, and nothing long:
    But in the course of one revolving moon
    Was chemist, fiddler, statesman and buffoon.
    John Dryden (1631–1700)
