Holiday Destination
It is a popular holiday destination during the New Zealand summer, and features several kilometres of safe swimming beaches. The western end of the beach, named 'West End' is a popular surfing area during the summer and Christmas period. The Whakatane Surf Lifesaving Club offers a patrolled beach over the peak season. A range of holiday accommodation is available including resort-style motels, bed and breakfasts and a large camping ground at the east end. There are also numerous walking tracks around the area, especially at the north end of the beach.
