North Hollywood High School - Zoo Magnet

Zoo Magnet

Founded in 1981, this magnet is a specialized school that buses students to a site next to the Los Angeles Zoo in Griffith Park. At this site, the approximately 300 students who attend take both regular classes such as history, math, and English and Advanced Placement classes related to biological and zoological sciences. Many of these classes include fieldwork in the Los Angeles Zoo, Botanical Gardens, Los Angeles River ecosystem, Autry National Center and the natural world of Griffith Park for tours and observation. This is the only school in LAUSD with ties to the Los Angeles Zoo. One class, Animal Behavior, requires observation time in the Los Angeles Zoo. Another class, Animal Husbandry, requires volunteering with zookeepers in different areas of the Los Angeles Zoo (this class is reserved for seniors). Classes meet 3 days a week for a duration of 2 hours per class, as they are on a block schedule. The school is a close-knit community composed of 10 teachers and very dedicated staff.

Famous quotes containing the words zoo and/or magnet:

The zoo cannot but disappoint. The public purpose of zoos is to offer visitors the opportunity of looking at animals. Yet nowhere in a zoo can a stranger encounter the look of an animal. At the most, the animal’s gaze flickers and passes on. They look sideways. They look blindly beyond.
    John Berger (b. 1926)

Yes, but I do not travel to find comfortable, rich, and hospitable people, or clear sky, or ingots that cost too much. But if there were any magnet that would point to the countries and houses where are the persons who are intrinsically rich and powerful, I would sell all, and buy it, and put myself on the road to-day.
    Ralph Waldo Emerson (1803–1882)
