Development Proposals
A major housing development, which could double the population of the village, has been generally agreed. This will add 900 homes to the village. The scheduled re-opening of the Waverley railway line, which will connect the nearby village of Tweedbank with Edinburgh, may provide opportunities for the village to become a commuter settlement.
Proposals to expand and move the town's livestock auction facilities to the other side of the A68 road were approved in 2007, freeing up space for residential building.

Famous quotes containing the words development and/or proposals:
“As a final instance of the force of limitations in the development of concentration, I must mention that beautiful creature, Helen Keller, whom I have known for these many years. I am filled with wonder of her knowledge, acquired because shut out from all distraction. If I could have been deaf, dumb, and blind I also might have arrived at something.”
—Mark Twain [Samuel Langhorne Clemens] (18351910)
“One theme links together these new proposals for family policythe idea that the family is exceedingly durable. Changes in structure and function and individual roles are not to be confused with the collapse of the family. Families remain more important in the lives of children than other institutions. Family ties are stronger and more vital than many of us imagine in the perennial atmosphere of crisis surrounding the subject.”
—Joseph Featherstone (20th century)
