Newcastle Upon Tyne East (UK Parliament Constituency) - History

History

This traditionally safe district of Newcastle upon Tyne for the Labour Party has been less so since 2006, when a pattern of the Liberal Democrats winning council seats across the constituency with large majorities was noticed. This indicated a possibility of Labour losing the seat to the Liberal Democrats at the 2010 general election. In the event, Labour's Nick Brown held the seat with his smallest majority in thirty years, while Labour benefitted from the associated increased turnout to take the Walkergate council Ward from the Liberal Democrats.

Famous quotes containing the word history:

We may pretend that we’re basically moral people who make mistakes, but the whole of history proves otherwise.
    Terry Hands (b. 1941)

At present cats have more purchasing power and influence than the poor of this planet. Accidents of geography and colonial history should no longer determine who gets the fish.
    Derek Wall (b. 1965)

No one can understand Paris and its history who does not understand that its fierceness is the balance and justification of its frivolity. It is called a city of pleasure; but it may also very specially be called a city of pain. The crown of roses is also a crown of thorns. Its people are too prone to hurt others, but quite ready also to hurt themselves. They are martyrs for religion, they are martyrs for irreligion; they are even martyrs for immorality.
    Gilbert Keith Chesterton (1874–1936)
