New York Air Route Traffic Control Center

New York Air Route Traffic Control Center (ZNY)/New York ARTCC, or New York Center (via radio communications) is one of 22 Air Route Traffic Control Centers (ARTCC) in the United States. New York Center was the world's first Air Route Traffic Control Center (ARTCC), and is the veil surrounding the entire New York Metropolitan Area and Philadelphia areas, as well as 3,250,000 square miles (8,400,000 km2) of oceanic airspace.

Collectively, the Center is responsible for air traffic service in 3,270,000 square miles (8,500,000 km2) of controlled airspace. As of 2012, New York Center has remained the busiest air traffic facility in the world with respect to number of aircraft per hour. ZNY assumes en route control over 4 extremely busy Class B airports; virtually all of the air traffic in and out of the New York Metropolitan Area.

Due to multiple factors, the ZNY ARTCC is often regarded as one of the most complex airspaces in the United States.

Famous quotes containing the words york, air, route, traffic, control and/or center:

There is a small steam engine in his brain which not only sets the cerebral mass in motion, but keeps the owner in hot water.
—Unknown. New York Weekly Mirror (July 5, 1845)

Old among the young, poor among the rich, I adopt an air of indefinable superiority.
    Mason Cooley (b. 1927)

A route differs from a road not only because it is solely intended for vehicles, but also because it is merely a line that connects one point with another. A route has no meaning in itself; its meaning derives entirely from the two points that it connects. A road is a tribute to space. Every stretch of road has meaning in itself and invites us to stop. A route is the triumphant devaluation of space, which thanks to it has been reduced to a mere obstacle to human movement and a waste of time.
    Milan Kundera (b. 1929)

Cry;—and upon thy so sore loss
Shall shine the traffic of Jacob’s ladder
Pitched betwixt Heaven and Charing Cross.
    Francis Thompson (1859–1907)

He took control of me for forty-five minutes. This time I’ll have control over him for the rest of his life. If he gets out fifteen years from now, I’ll know. I’ll check on him every three months through police computers. If he makes one mistake he’s going down again. I’ll make sure. I’m his worst enemy now.
Elizabeth Wilson, U.S. crime victim. As quoted in People magazine, p. 88 (May 31, 1993)

This is a strange little complacent country, in many ways a U.S.A. in miniature but of course nearer the center of disturbance!
    Eleanor Roosevelt (1884–1962)
