Local Government and Politics

Local issues are dealt with by the Mullingar Town council which elects nine members. The town is divided into the Mullingar East and Mullingar West local electoral areas for elections to Westmeath County Council, which elects nine members altogether. The town is part of the Longford-Westmeath constituency for elections to Dáil Éireann. The town is something of a stronghold for the centre left Labour Party, which holds four out of the nine seats on the town council and four out of the nine in the Mullingar local electoral areas.

Famous quotes containing the words local, government and/or politics:

This is the only “wet” community in a wide area, and is the rendezvous of cow hands seeking to break the monotony of chuck wagon food and range life. Friday night is the “big time” for local cowboys, and consequently the calaboose is called the “Friday night jail.”
—Administration in the State of Texa, U.S. public relief program (1935-1943)

Democracy means government by the uneducated, while aristocracy means government by the badly educated.
    Gilbert Keith Chesterton (1874–1936)

The [nineteenth-century] young men who were Puritans in politics were anti-Puritans in literature. They were willing to die for the independence of Poland or the Manchester Fenians; and they relaxed their tension by voluptuous reading in Swinburne.
    Rebecca West (1892–1983)
