Famous quotes containing the word religious:

Primarily I am a passionately religious man, and my novels must be written from the depth of my religious experience.
    —D.H. (David Herbert)

We are not a religious people, but we are a nation of politicians. We do not care for the Bible, but we do care for the newspaper. At any meeting of politicians ... how impertinent it would be to quote from the Bible! how pertinent to quote from a newspaper or from the Constitution!
    Henry David Thoreau (1817–1862)

The churches ... have lost much of their authority over youth because they have refused to re-examine their religious sanctions and their dogmatic preaching in the light of modern physiology, psychology and sociology.
    Agnes E. Meyer (1887–1970)
