Moment of Inertia - Moment of Inertia Matrix

Moment of Inertia Matrix

The scalar moments of inertia appear as elements in a matrix when a system of particles is assembled into a rigid body that moves in three dimensional space. This inertia matrix appears in the calculation of the angular momentum, kinetic energy and resultant torque of the rigid system of particles. Let the system of particles Pi, i=1,...,n be located at the coordinates ri and velocities vi. Select a reference point R and compute the relative position and velocity vectors,

where ω is the angular velocity of the system.

Famous quotes containing the words moment of, moment, inertia and/or matrix:

I cannot say what poetry is; I know that our sufferings and our concentrated joy, our states of plunging far and dark and turning to come back to the world—so that the moment of intense turning seems still and universal—all are here, in a music like the music of our time, like the hero and like the anonymous forgotten; and there is an exchange here in which our lives are met, and created.
    Muriel Rukeyser (1913–1980)

They are so greedy and impetuous that they are frequently caught by being entangled in the line the moment it is cast.
    Henry David Thoreau (1817–1862)

What is wrong with priests and popes is that instead of being apostles and saints, they are nothing but empirics who say “I know” instead of “I am learning,” and pray for credulity and inertia as wise men pray for scepticism and activity.
    George Bernard Shaw (1856–1950)

    “The matrix is God?”
“In a manner of speaking, although it would be more accurate ... to say that the matrix has a God, since this being’s omniscience and omnipotence are assumed to be limited to the matrix.”
“If it has limits, it isn’t omnipotent.”
“Exactly.... Cyberspace exists, insofar as it can be said to exist, by virtue of human agency.”
    William Gibson (b. 1948)
