Trânta (a form of wrestling) is the national sport in Moldova. Association football is the most popular sport in Moldova.

Rugby union is popular as well. Registered players have doubled, and almost 10,000 spectators turn up at every European Nations Cup match. The most prestigious cycling race is the Moldova President's Cup, which was first run in 2004.

In the 2012 Summer Olympics Cristina Iovu won the Bronze Medal in the Women's Weightlifting Competition (Women's weight class 48–53 kg).
