The Rhine is one of the busiest waterway in the world. The Middle Rhine Valley is the gap in the Rhenish Slate Mountains and forms a particular bottleneck due to its tight curves and shallows. To minimize the risk to shipping, the Middle Rhine Warning System was created. This system uses light signals to guide ships through the dangerous passages.
