Merit System

The merit system is the process of promoting and hiring government employees based on their ability to perform a job, rather than on their political connections. It is the opposite of the spoils system.

Famous quotes containing the words merit and/or system:

The arrogance that accompanies merit offends us even more than the arrogance of people who are lacking in merit: since merit itself offends us.
    Friedrich Nietzsche (1844–1900)

Loving feels lonely in a violent world,
irrelevant to people burning like last year’s weed
with bellies distended, with fish throats agape
and flesh melting down to glue.
We can no longer shut out the screaming
That leaks through the ventilation system ...
    Marge Piercy (b. 1936)
