History
MC Sports began in 1946 as Michigan Clothiers in Grand Rapids, Michigan. At this time, men's clothing had shared the shelving spaces with military surplus items.
MC Sports switched its focus from just clothing, to sports equipment, footwear and apparel. In the 1970s and 1980s, MC Sports purchased two sports chains; the Morrie Mages Sports chain of three stores located in Chicago, and the Browns Sporting Goods chain of 19 stores headquartered in Peoria, Illinois.
Throughout the 1990s, continued growth was sustained as MC Sports entered markets in Kansas City, and others in Ohio, Indiana, and Illinois.
While some locations have closed due to the influx of big-box stores and larger chains such as Sports Authority, MC Sports still retains over 80 stores in eight states across the Midwest, filling a role in sporting goods similar to that played by Ace Hardware in hardware, where the company goal is to provide convenience and more personable experience than the mega-stores.

Famous quotes containing the word history:
“Jesus Christ belonged to the true race of the prophets. He saw with an open eye the mystery of the soul. Drawn by its severe harmony, ravished with its beauty, he lived in it, and had his being there. Alone in all history he estimated the greatness of man.”
—Ralph Waldo Emerson (18031882)
“Let us not underrate the value of a fact; it will one day flower in a truth. It is astonishing how few facts of importance are added in a century to the natural history of any animal. The natural history of man himself is still being gradually written.”
—Henry David Thoreau (18171862)
“There is a constant in the average American imagination and taste, for which the past must be preserved and celebrated in full-scale authentic copy; a philosophy of immortality as duplication. It dominates the relation with the self, with the past, not infrequently with the present, always with History and, even, with the European tradition.”
—Umberto Eco (b. 1932)
