Conflict of Interest Controversy

While serving as a public defender in San Francisco, Gonzalez took a month-long paid leave of absence to act as co-counsel for a corporation, Cobra Solutions, in its $16 million lawsuit against San Francisco, Gonzalez's employer. In the lawsuit, Gonzalez gave the opening arguments and cross-examined witnesses. The San Francisco Public Defender's office rules of ethics states: "No employee may provide legal advice or legal representation...to any person or entity other than in the employee's official capacity." Said Peter Keene, former chief assistant public defender and dean emeritus at the Golden Gate University Law School, "I'm totally flabbergasted. It is totally out of line. It is not only a complete conflict, it flies in the face of your loyalty to your main employer, the city. Matt shouldn't be doing it."

Famous quotes containing the words conflict of, conflict, interest and/or controversy:

Another danger is imminent: A contested result. And we have no such means for its decision as ought to be provided by law. This must be attended to hereafter.... If a contest comes now it may lead to a conflict of arms. I can only try to do my duty to my countrymen in that case. I shall let no personal ambition turn me from the path of duty. Bloodshed and civil war must be averted if possible. If forced to fight, I have no fears from lack of courage or firmness.
    Rutherford Birchard Hayes (1822–1893)

Every man is in a state of conflict, owing to his attempt to reconcile himself and his relationship with life to his conception of harmony. This conflict makes his soul a battlefield, where the forces that wish this reconciliation fight those that do not and reject the alternative solutions they offer. Works of art are attempts to fight out this conflict in the imaginative world.
    Rebecca West (1892–1983)

As with our colleges, so with a hundred “modern improvements”; there is an illusion about them; there is not always a positive advance. The devil goes on exacting a compound interest to the last for his early share and numerous succeeding investments in them.
    Henry David Thoreau (1817–1862)

Ours was a highly activist administration, with a lot of controversy involved ... but I’m not sure that it would be inconsistent with my own political nature to do it differently if I had it to do all over again.
Jimmy Carter (James Earl Carter, Jr.)
