Madonna On Late Show With David Letterman

When Madonna appeared on Late Show with David Letterman on March 31, 1994, her coarse language, including thirteen uses of the word "fuck", made the episode the most censored in American network television talk-show history; it also resulted in some of the highest ratings of Letterman's late-night career.

Madonna's language and behavior—which was provocative, seemingly random at times, full of double entendres, and ended with a refusal to leave the set—caused a large public controversy. The Federal Communications Commission received numerous complaints, echoing Letterman's (sarcastic) remarks that "people don't want strong language in their homes on late night television".

Famous quotes containing the words madonna, late, show and/or david:

In our minds lives the madonna image—the all-embracing, all- giving tranquil mother of a Raphael painting, one child at her breast, another at her feet; a woman fulfilled, one who asks nothing more than to nurture and nourish. This creature of fantasy, this myth, is the model—the unattainable ideal against which women measure, not only their performance, but their feelings about being mothers.
    Lillian Breslow Rubin (20th century)

Which form of proverb do you prefer—”Better late than never,” or “Better never than late”?
Lewis Carroll [Charles Lutwidge Dodgson] (1832–1898)

You must not distort justice; you must not show partiality; and you must not accept bribes, for a bribe blinds the eyes of the wise and subverts the cause of those who are in the right.
    Bible: Hebrew, Deuteronomy 16:19.

How does it become a man to behave toward this American government to-day? I answer, that he cannot without disgrace be associated with it. I cannot for an instant recognize that political organization as my government which is the slave’s government also.
    —Henry David Thoreau (1817–1862)
