Lyric Opera House

The Lyric Opera House is a music venue in Baltimore, Maryland, United States, located in direct proximity to the University of Baltimore, with which it shares a stop on Baltimore's blue line light rail route.

The building was modeled after the Concertgebouw concert hall in Amsterdam, and it was inaugurated on 31 October 1894 with a performance by the Boston Symphony Orchestra and Australian opera singer Nellie Melba as the featured soloist. Beginning 1904, it was also used for touring performances by the Metropolitan Opera, and from 1950, it was the home of the Baltimore Opera Company until the company's liquidation in 2009.

Famous quotes containing the words lyric, opera and/or house:

The lyric deals with love and sorrow, the aphorism with contradiction and deceit.
    Mason Cooley (b. 1927)

The opera house sparkled with tiers
And tiers of eyes, like mine enlarged by belladonna,
    James Merrill (b. 1926)

The house waited on your private beach
    each day,
when you had the time to return to her.
And you so often had the time,
even when fury blew out her chimney,
even when love lifted the shingles....
    Anne Sexton (1928–1974)
