Famous quotes containing the words louisiana, barrier, island and/or plan:
“I saw in Louisiana a live-oak growing,
All alone stood it and the moss hung down from the branches,
Without any companion it grew there uttering joyous leaves of dark
green,
And its look, rude, unbending, lusty, made me think of myself,
But I wonderd how it could utter joyous leaves standing alone
there without its friend near, for I knew I could not,”
—Walt Whitman (18191892)
“The hearts of Afro-American women are too warm and too large for race hatred. Long suffering has so chastened them that they are developing a special sense of sympathy for all who suffer and fail of justice.”
—Fannie Barrier Williams (18551944)
“Beyond this island bound
By a thin sea of flesh
And a bone coast ...”
—Dylan Thomas (19141953)
“If you should ever acknowledge my existence, I plan to snub you.”
—Mason Cooley (b. 1927)
