According to the 2001 census conducted by Statistics South Africa, the population of the greater Makhado municipality is 270,428. The municipality incorporates Louis Trichardt and adjoining areas that are principally in former homelands. The population breakdown is 96.7% Black, 2.6% White, 0.3% Asian and 0.3% Coloured. The population of Louis Trichardt, excluding the townships is about 10,000.
