Logarithm of A Matrix - A Lie Group Theory Perspective

A Lie Group Theory Perspective

In the theory of Lie groups, there is an exponential map from a Lie algebra g to the corresponding Lie group G

For matrix Lie groups, the elements of g and G are square matrices and the exponential map is given by the matrix exponential. The inverse map is multivalued and coincides with the matrix logarithm discussed here. The logarithm maps from the Lie group G into the Lie algebra g. Note that the exponential map is a local diffeomorphism between a neighborhood U of the zero matrix and a neighborhood V of the identity matrix . Thus the (matrix) logarithm is well-defined as a map

Famous quotes containing the words lie, group, theory and/or perspective:

People often become scholars for the same reason they become soldiers: simply because they are unfit for any other station. Their right hand has to earn them a livelihood; one might say they lie down like bears in winter and seek sustenance from their paws.
    —G.C. (Georg Christoph)

If the Russians have gone too far in subjecting the child and his peer group to conformity to a single set of values imposed by the adult society, perhaps we have reached the point of diminishing returns in allowing excessive autonomy and in failing to utilize the constructive potential of the peer group in developing social responsibility and consideration for others.
    Urie Bronfenbrenner (b. 1917)

Don’t confuse hypothesis and theory. The former is a possible explanation; the latter, the correct one. The establishment of theory is the very purpose of science.
    Martin H. Fischer (1879–1962)

All things being equal, I would choose a woman over a man in order to even the balance of power, to insinuate a different perspective into the process, to give young women something to shoot for and someone to look up to. But all things are rarely equal.
