List of Trees of The Caribbean

Prior to European settlement, the Caribbean was dominated by forested ecosystems. The insular Caribbean has been considered a biodiversity hotspot. Although species diversity is lower than on mainland systems, endemism is high.

Species diversity is highest and endemism is lowest in Trinidad, which has a predominantly continental flora. Endemism is highest in Cuba and Hispaniola, the largest members of the Greater Antilles.

Famous quotes containing the words list of, list, trees and/or caribbean:

I made a list of things I have
    to remember and a list
of things I want to forget,
but I see they are the same list.

The advice of their elders to young men is very apt to be as unreal as a list of the hundred best books.

Usually the scenery about them is drear and savage enough; and the logger’s camp is as completely in the woods as a fungus at the foot of a pine in a swamp; no outlook but to the sky overhead; no more clearing than is made by cutting down the trees of which it is built, and those which are necessary for fuel.
    Henry David Thoreau (1817–1862)

But now Miss America, World’s champion woman, you take your promenading self down into the cobalt blue waters of the Caribbean and see what happens. You meet a lot of darkish men who make vociferous love to you, but otherwise pay you no mid.
    Zora Neale Hurston (1891–1960)
