The 31 tribal colleges of 1994 are represented as a system by the single membership of the American Indian Higher Education Consortium (AIHEC).
The AIHEC has its headquarters in Alexandria, Virginia. None of its member schools is located in Virginia. Instead they range from Michigan westwards to Alaska, Arizona, and California. Like many American associations, it has its headquarters in Alexandria and nearby cities and towns for ready access to Washington, D.C.
