Recent Changes in Administrative Divisions
- 1995 - Horinger County and Qingshuihe County are transferred from Ulanqab League to Hohhot (prefecture-level city).
- 1996
- Wuchuan County is transferred from Ulanqab League to Hohhot (prefecture-level city).
- Darhan Muminggan United Banner is transferred from Ulanqab League to Baotou (prefecture-level city).
- Arxan (county-level city) is established from parts of Horqin Right Front Banner in Hinggan League.
- 1999
- Jirim League becomes Tongliao (prefecture-level city); its capital, Tongliao (county-level city), becomes Horqin District.
- Suburban District and Shiguai Mining District of Baotou (prefecture-level city) are renamed Jiuyuan District and Shiguai District, respectively.
- 2000 - Suburban District of Hohhot (prefecture-level city) is renamed Saihan District. In addition, the borders of Hohhot's districts are rearranged.
- 2001
- Yekejuu League becomes Ordos (prefecture-level city); its capital, Dongsheng (county-level city]], becomes Dongsheng District.
- Hulunbuir League becomes Hulunbuir (prefecture-level city); its capital, Hailar (county-level city), becomes Hailar District.
- 2003
- Bayannur League becomes Bayannur (prefecture-level city); its capital, Linhe (county-level city), becomes Linhe District.
- Ulanqab League becomes Ulanqab (prefecture-level city); its capital, Jining (county-level city), becomes Jining District.
