Leonard Orr - Childhood and Education

Childhood and Education

Orr was born in Walton, New York. During his teen years, he became a born again Christian. When he converted to Christianity and started to read the Bible, he took Jesus' words ("He who believes in me shall never taste death.") literally, that anyone who believed in Jesus would not die.

He attended seminary with plans of becoming a preacher. However, while in school, Orr said he felt a calling to be a minister to the unchurched. Pursuing this feeling of a calling and some of his curiosity about life, Orr soon was reading and practicing New Thought philosophy (such as Science of Mind and Ernest Holmes).

Famous quotes containing the words childhood and, childhood and/or education:

[Children] do not yet lie to themselves and therefore have not entered upon that important tacit agreement which marks admission into the adult world, to wit, that I will respect your lies if you will agree to let mine alone. That unwritten contract is one of the clear dividing lines between the world of childhood and the world of adulthood.
    Leontine Young (20th century)

Pleasing illusion: “if my childhood had been the Paradise it should have been, all would now be well.”
    Mason Cooley (b. 1927)

Do we honestly believe that hopeless kids growing up under the harsh new rules will turn out to be chaste, studious, responsible adults? On the contrary, by limiting welfare, job training, education and nutritious food, won’t we plant the seeds for another bumper crop of out-of-wedlock moms, deadbeat dads and worse?
    Richard B. Stolley (20th century)
