The district has a population density of 3 inhabitants per square kilometre (7.8 /sq mi) . Its population growth rate over the decade 2001-2011 was 25.48%. Leh has a sex ratio of 583 females for every 1000 males, and a literacy rate of 80.48%.
According to the 2001 census of India, Leh district had a population of 117,232. Buddhists made up the majority at 77.3%, followed by Muslims at 13.8% and then Hindus at 8.2%.
