Laurence Evelyn Wood Pomeroy and The Grand Prix Car

Laurence Henry Pomeroy had one son, also called Laurence (Laurence Evelyn Wood Pomeroy born Luton late 1907) who became a renowned motoring and technical journalist. Few regular 1940s and 1950s readers of Temple Press's best-selling weekly, The Motor, could remain unaware of Laurence Pomeroy senior's design successes at Vauxhall. Laurence Pomeroy junior was technical editor of The Motor 1936-1958. As his father's personal assistant he learnt engineering not from the bottom but from the top. He died the same way as his father and at the same age, 58, in 1966.

L.E.W. Pomeroy is best remembered for his two volume history The Grand Prix Car covering the period 1906 to 1955. He also wrote Design and Behaviour of the Racing Car which he wrote in collaboration with Stirling Moss.

Famous quotes containing the words laurence, wood and/or grand:

    We sing, but oh the clay is vile
    Beneath our feet, and long the mile;
    But let the world dream otherwise,
    We wear the mask!
    —Paul Laurence Dunbar (1872–1906)

    All who wish to hand down to their children that happy republican system bequeathed to them by their revolutionary fathers, must now take their stand against this consolidating, corrupting money power, and put it down, or their children will become hewers of wood and drawers of water to this aristocratic ragocracy.
    Andrew Jackson (1767–1845)

    Man, in the ideal, is so noble and so sparkling, such a grand and glowing creature, that over any ignominious blemish in him all his fellows should run to throw their costliest robes.
    Herman Melville (1819–1891)
