Community Involvement and Outreach
LCDS participates in Children Deserve a Chance, a program organized to offer educational opportunity to young African-American children. The school also has a partnership with Schreiber Pediatric. Community service is a large part of the LCDS life from early years. In the Middle School, grades vote on a class project for the year, which could include tutoring/mentoring younger children or performing skits at senior citizen centers. In the past, eighth graders have volunteered weekly at Milagro House, a facility for homeless mothers and children. In the Upper School, there are a variety of service oriented clubs, such as Community Service Club, Peer Mentoring Club and Free the Children. Students are encouraged and supported in their efforts to volunteer for regional charities targeting a diverse range of causes, such as animal welfare, education, green issues, health, hunger, political activism and poverty.

Famous quotes containing the words community and/or involvement:
“Stories of law violations are weighed on a different set of scales in the Black mind than in the white. Petty crimes embarrass the community and many people wistfully wonder why Negroes dont rob more banks, embezzle more funds and employ graft in the unions.... This ... appeals particularly to one who is unable to compete legally with his fellow citizens.”
—Maya Angelou (b. 1928)
“Even if you find yourself in a heated exchange with your toddler, it is better for your child to feel the heat rather than for him to feel you withdraw emotionally.... Active and emotional involvement between parent and child helps the child make the limits a part of himself.”
—Stanley I. Greenspan (20th century)
